Abstract

Comparision of Functional Orthopedic Treatment Results in Children and Young Adults

di Rahhal Ahmad

Among all malocclusions, CLII contributes approximately 15%. The CLII malocclusion is used to describe the condition in which the mandibular first molars occlude distal to the normal relationship with the maxillary first molars. CLII can be further divided to dental and skeletal malocclusions. The effect of the functional treatment on growing patients is very well known. For young adult patients with skeletal class II malocclusion caused by mandibular deficiency two treatment options are available. The first option is combined surgical and orthodontic treatment, which lengthens the mandible anteriorly through mandibular sagittal split osteotomy; this, in turn, can correct the skeletal and soft tissue relationship. The second option is functional orthopedic treatment, which requires careful diagnosis, and treatment planning that takes into consideration esthetic, occlusal, and functional aspects. In this presentation I will describe and furnish the results of two group of patients who were treated with removable functional appliance (Rahhal), one of the groups is growing patient with skeletal CLII and the other one is young adults with skeletal CLII .
